Welcome to August!

Posted on August 2, 2019 at 3:37 PM by Kelly Macejewski

  • Prepare your soil for fall gardening.
  • Add compost to the soil, mix in a little soil minerals (like lava sand), add some corn gluten meal, stir in some leaves, water it well and spread a thin layer of mulch over your soil recipe.

Now is the time to look at plants such as:

  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Dill
  • Parsley
  • Beets
  • Turnips
  • Romaine lettuce
  • Cabbage
  • Swiss chard
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Arugula
  • Collard greens
  • Mustard greens
  • Carrots

Come end of August, you can plant your fall seeds and the soil will be ready. Enjoy gardening when it is cooler and when fewer bad bugs are out there to attack your veggies.

Plant Care:

  • Check pecan trees for worms and foliage diseases.
  • Check for cinch bugs in St. Augustine lawns.
  • Check for yellowed leaves aggravated by the hot weather.
  • Keep young vegetable plants adequately watered.

Fall and winter vegetables will be here before you know it. Send us pictures of your garden; we would love to see what you’re planting!
